The right tree - in the right place
Factors to consider before planting a tree:
1- What is the trees function? Is it for shade, or to add beauty to the landscape? Will it create a barrier from sight, sound, or wind? Once the function of the tree is indentified a tree species can be selected.
2 - Size and location
Available space is often the most overlooked factor when planting a tree. Some aspects to consider are, will the tree encroach other trees causing them to become misshapen? City Ordinance states that no trees of medium size may be planted closer than 25 feet to each other and large trees no closer than 30 feet. The ordinance also states that medium trees must be 3 feet from the sidewalk and the curb, while large trees must maintain a distance of 4 feet. All trees must be at least 8 feet from any driveway or alley.
Utilities need to be considered as tree roots can move drainage pipes and other utilities, while the trees canopy can interfere with the overhead wires. City ordinance states that trees planted under or within 10 lateral feet of any overhead wire must have their leaders trimmed as well as any other branches growing towards the wires when within two-thirds of the distance from the ground to any overhead wires.
Tree Planting
The first step in planting a tree is to get the utilities located. The number to call is 1-800-One-Call (1-800-292-8989). Its a free call and it's the law.
- Prepare a planting site not just a hole in the ground.
- Loosen the soil beyond the drip line of the tree.
- Plant at a depth where the roots spread from the trunk.
- Brace the tree only if it will not remain upright in a moderate wind.
- Brace with broad, belt-like material that won't injure the bark.
- Keep soil moist not water-logged to the depth of the roots.
- Mulch away from the trunk with composted materials.
- Wait until the second season to begin fertilizing and training cuts for shaping.
Mulch
- Mulch helps maintain even soil temperature in the roots by keeping them cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
- Promotes plant growth.
- Controls weeds.
- Conserves soil moisture.
- Improves soil structure and quality over the root area.
- Protects from mower and trimmer damage.
Mulching - Four Easy Steps
1. Place a layer of mulch 3-4 inches deep around the base of the tree.
2. Pull mulch away from the trunk creating a donut shape.
3. Mulch should extend at least to the tree's drip line.
4. Check periodically to maintain the 3-4 inch mulch depth.
